Covid was a hard time for everyone. Many artists struggled during this time to make art and get noticed. However, Diana Al-Hadid had no problem creating several masterpieces. In 2021, from March 18th to May 28th, Hadid displayed eight of her works she made during the worldwide lockdown in her exhibition “An Exchange Between Clouds And Rocks”. They were shown in Galerie Isa in Mumbai. Unlike many of her other exhibitions, “An Exchange Between Clouds And Rocks” consisted of only wall panels. Out of the eight panels my favorite is “A Still Life, In Contrast Still”. The contrast between the backdrop, plant, and table make the piece really dynamic. I think the coolest part of the panel is the plant. It's interesting how Al-Hadid used negative space to give the appearance of the plant being in a pot, when there's nothing there but an empty space. Also the plant gives the piece a lot of movement in the way it seems to erupt from the table. Another excellent piece is “Weaving And Wandering”. To me it looks like a bunch of dragons weaving together. While “A Still Life, In Contrast Still” has a clear focus/central figure, “Weaving And Wandering” definitely seems more abstract and busier. The last piece I’ll mention is “A Complex Garden, Palace, Harem”. The incorporation of architecture into the piece makes it seem like some enchanted historical palace. The more you look at the piece, the more details appear and give depth to the extravagant dwelling. All eight pieces in this exhibit have their own beauty and uniqueness, and it's just amazing to see how despite the pandemic Al-Hadid still managed to make these incredible pieces.
